Who should attend? |
Product managers, business analysts, interaction designers, information
architects, domain experts working with IT firms and others responsible for
gathering user requirements will benefit from this workshop.
The techniques are optimized to work for inter-disciplinary teams working
on complex projects. While the techniques can be applied to any design
activity, in this workshop we will focus on acquiring data for the design of
interactive products, particularly in the IT industry – commercial software,
web applications, smart products, mobile appliances etc. |
Contextual Inquiry |
Any design process includes the step of going to talk to the user. But
‘asking them what they need’ presumes that they can really tell you. Real
work is complex and intricate and not easy to map out. Users are good in
doing their work, not in making it explicit in terms that matter to design.
Contextual Inquiry is an interview technique used for understanding
users, their work and their needs. It helps one collect and manage complex
user data without loosing detail. It uses an ethnographic approach to build
an understanding of what a user does, within the deadlines of commercial
development projects.
In this workshop, we also look at methods to analyze data and share it
with a development team and to consolidate data across users.
Contextual Inquiry helps teams to do what good designers do individually
by externalizing their best practices and scaling up to handle large
projects. |
|
Goals of the workshop |
Understanding users leads to better products. But are
there any interview techniques you could use? How to see beyond what the
user can tell you? How do you document all the details of work? How to
address contradictory findings across users? How can all members of the
team develop a shared perspective?
While the core technique of Contextual Inquiry is simple, people find
it useful to get some guidance and experience before they actually use
it in a live project. This workshop tries to provide just that.
After attending the workshop, participants should be able to conduct
Contextual Inquiry in live projects, analyze data and consolidate
findings across users. They should also be able to influence the user
requirements gathering processes within organizations. |
