IIT Bombay sits in the middle of a verdant piece of land in the eastern suburbs of Mumbai. Flanked by the Powai Lake and the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, the campus is home to a wide range of flora and fauna. The aim of our group is to build an awareness of our priviledge to be living in this unique campus, and to foster a spirit of understanding and kindness to our non-human neighbours.

In particular, the group aims to reduce incidents of dog-human and cattle-human aggression. We hope to provide a secure environment for the campus strays, and are committed to bringing down their numbers in a sustainable fashion. We also hope to reach out to the wider campus community about the need for humane treatment of strays.

STRAY DIRECTORY: We hope to build a directory of all stray dogs on campus, along with a record of their neutering and vaccination status, their usual locations, and the contact person(s) responsible for their feeding and general welfare.

NEUTERING: Working with the Public Health Office (PHO) of IIT Bombay and authorised NGOs, we hope to undertake a massive sterilisation program for all campus strays. This will help in controlling, and ultimately reducing the stray population. In addition, sterilised dogs are much more docile and friendly, since there is no mating-related aggression.

VACCINATION: We aim to provide regular anti-rabies vaccinations to the campus strays, and also keep a record of the vaccination dates in the Stray directory. This will make the strays safer for the campus community. Vaccinations will be undertaken with the help of qualified members of the campus community.

SENSITISATION: WIth the help of NGOs, and the volunteers of this group, we hope to hold sensitisation camps in which we will attempt to address the concerns of the campus community about stray dogs, and provide pointers on helpful courses of action when faced with an aggressive animal.

WORKSHOPS: We hope to facilitate workshops for the staff of the Public Health Office (PHO) and the Security Section of IITB. These will be conducted by NGOs who work in the field of animal safety, and will address the concerns of the staff, and provide a resource for proper handling procedures, as well the applicable legal issues.

VETERINARIAN CAMPS: We aim to hold regular (weekly/bi-weekly) veterinarian camps inside the campus, to provide treatment for injured and sick stray dogs and cattle.

CONTACT: This group hope to be able to function as a point of contact for all stray-related concerns inside the IITB campus. Please get in touch with one of the members of this group in case of any problems related to animal aggression. Please also contact us if you notice any instance of animal cruelty.
