Estimation of the Potential for Ground-Based, Roof-Top and Canal-Based Solar Power Plants in the State of Goa
This study, conducted by CTARA, IIT Bombay and sponsored by the Department of Science, Technology and Environment, Goa, systematically estimated solar PV potential across three categories: government building rooftops, canal tops, and abandoned mine lands. Using GIS mapping with 10% site verification, the study found rooftop potential of ~26 MWp across government buildings, ~39.9 MWp on canal tops, and ~57.5 MWp on abandoned mine lands — totalling approximately 123 MWp. These are conservative estimates, with actual potential likely higher. The study concluded that Goa can meet its 150 MW solar RPO target set by MNRE, potentially achieving energy self-sufficiency.
