Life in India is cheap. Injuries and deaths occur from situations that shouldn't even be accidents. These injuries and deaths are an instantiation of a slow disaster that is creeping along without any public recognition. Slow disasters are disasters that are do not reach the public perception and are subliminal. They do however cause widespread havoc covertly over a few decades.
The aim of this website is to increase the public awareness regarding these incidents and accidents that are so commonplace. Even though they are recurrent, they fail to dent the public conscience. These deaths, injuries and lost livelihoods can be averted through concerted effort for public safety in everyday situations. Vigorous and robust actions from the general public to both avert and repoond to these incidents and accidents will hopefully bring out about a social change. This should go a long way in heightening sensitivity with regards to the mundane deaths that can and should be avoided. This is part of a larger initiative to sensitize the population to the loss of lives that so often go unnoticed at residential and commercial sites.
Accidents in India is an ongoing effort made by the contributions from various people from the HFSS Studios, IIT Bombay. The idea of bringing safety into the public conscience is championed by Vivek Kant, HFSS Studios.
The current iteration of the website is designed and developed by Jayasurya. The previous iteration of the website was designed and developed by Avyay Kashyap. Thuli Chishi made the very first website concept and also designed the splash screen as part of a Teaching Assistantship during her Final Year of M.Des 2019.
The project was conceptualized by Vivek Kant. The data collection, and intial ideations was done by Vyom Kushwaha*, as a part of his Design Research Seminar project in 2019 under the guidance of Vivek Kant. The data set was taken up further as a part of this project by Vivek Kant and Avyay Kashyap and resulted in the current web-exhibit.
